iDEAL is the most widely used online payment method in the Netherlands. Rather than being a wallet or a card scheme, it is a bank-transfer protocol: when you choose iDEAL at checkout, you select your own Dutch bank, are redirected to that bank's app or online-banking environment, and approve the payment there using the security you already use for everyday banking. The money moves directly from your bank account to the merchant's account. It was launched in 2005 by a group of major Dutch banks and quickly became the default way Dutch consumers pay online, handling a large majority of e-commerce transactions in the country.
The iDEAL brand and rulebook are owned by Currence iDEAL B.V., which historically sat under Currence, the Dutch payment-scheme body whose shareholders were ABN AMRO, ING and Rabobank. In October 2023 the European Payments Initiative (EPI) completed its acquisition of Currence iDEAL B.V. alongside Luxembourg-based Payconiq International. iDEAL is therefore now part of EPI, the bank-backed group building a pan-European payment solution called Wero. This ownership change matters for the method's future, which we cover below.
An important point for players to understand up front: iDEAL is a way to send money from your bank account, not an account that holds a balance. There is no iDEAL login, no stored value, and no separate iDEAL card.
iDEAL is not a standalone licensed institution in the way an e-money wallet is. Payments run over the rails of regulated Dutch banks, and the parties that initiate and acquire iDEAL transactions operate under the EU's revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2). In the Netherlands the relevant prudential and conduct supervisor is De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), which licenses and oversees banks, payment institutions and electronic-money institutions. Because an iDEAL payment is authorised inside your own bank's environment using strong customer authentication, the consumer protections and security obligations that apply to that bank apply to the payment.
We do not publish a specific licence number for iDEAL itself, because the method operates as a scheme on top of separately regulated banks and payment-service providers rather than as a single named licence holder. If you want to understand how payment and gambling oversight differ, our guide to casino licences explained sets out what a gambling licence does and does not cover, which is distinct from the payment-side supervision described here.
Fees. For consumers, iDEAL is free. There is no charge to the player for making an iDEAL payment, and there is no subscription or membership. Any cost sits on the merchant side. You should still check the casino's own cashier page, because some operators add their own deposit or processing fees regardless of the method used.
Speed. iDEAL deposits are effectively instant. Once you approve the payment in your banking app, the casino receives confirmation within seconds and your balance is credited right away in most cases. This is one of the method's main attractions: there is no card-entry step, no waiting for a code by SMS from a third party, and no separate top-up.
Withdrawals. This is the single most important thing to know. iDEAL is a deposit-only, one-way method. It is designed to push a payment from your bank to a merchant, and it has no mechanism for a merchant to send money back to you through the same channel. At online casinos this means you generally cannot withdraw your winnings to iDEAL. Operators that accept iDEAL deposits will pay out by another route, most commonly a standard bank transfer to the same account, or occasionally another supported method. Before you deposit, confirm in writing what the withdrawal route and timing will be, because the convenience of the deposit does not carry over to the cash-out. For background on what payout claims actually mean, see fast-payout casinos: what they mean.
Privacy. Because the payment happens inside your bank, the casino does not see your full banking credentials and you are not entering card numbers into the gambling site. Your bank, however, will show the transaction on your statement, and the merchant name or descriptor associated with a gambling deposit will be visible there. iDEAL does not anonymise gambling spend, and we would not present any payment method as a way to hide gambling activity.
Regional availability. iDEAL is a Netherlands method. To use it you need a current account with a participating Dutch bank. It is not aimed at players outside the Dutch market, and a casino that lists iDEAL is effectively signalling that it serves Dutch customers. Players in the Netherlands should also be aware that the legal, licensed market is regulated by the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA); the presence of a familiar local payment method does not by itself tell you whether an operator holds a Dutch gambling licence.
The Wero transition. iDEAL is being phased into Wero, EPI's pan-European payment solution, starting in 2026. Co-branded "iDEAL | Wero" branding began appearing in early 2026, payments through Wero are scheduled to start during 2026, and EPI has indicated the iDEAL brand will be phased out by the end of 2027 as transactions migrate to Wero. EPI states that the familiar steps, selecting a bank and approving the payment, are intended to stay the same and that no action is required from consumers. We will revisit this profile as the migration progresses, since the brand you see at checkout may change even though the underlying experience is meant to stay similar.
BetVouch does not sell or promote payment methods, and we do not rank casinos by which method they carry. Where we have verified that an operator we profile accepts iDEAL, that detail appears on the operator's own page. You can browse the operators we cover at our business directory and check each cashier section for the methods it lists. As always, the deposit options an operator advertises are not a substitute for confirming its licensing and its complaints record.
The most frequent point of confusion is the deposit-versus-withdrawal asymmetry. Players sometimes assume that because a deposit cleared instantly through iDEAL, the withdrawal will return the same way; it will not, and that mismatch is the source of avoidable frustration when winnings take longer to arrive by bank transfer. A second issue is the redirect step: if your banking app does not open or the session times out, the payment can fail or appear pending, and you should wait for the bank's confirmation rather than re-attempting blindly, to avoid a double deposit. A third is descriptor surprise, where a player did not expect the gambling merchant name to appear on their bank statement. If a deposit is taken but not credited, or a promised payout does not arrive, that is a dispute with the casino and its regulator, not with iDEAL; our guide to handling casino complaints explains the escalation path. If gambling spend is becoming hard to track or control, the instant, frictionless nature of bank-app deposits can make that worse, and our responsible gambling resources cover deposit limits and self-exclusion. Players weighing bonuses against cash-out conditions should also read wagering requirements explained, since payout problems are often rooted in bonus terms rather than the payment method.
Editor note (Marijan Karajanov, 11 June 2026). A full hands-on BetVouch review of this provider, conducted under our Editorial Policy and scored against our six-criteria methodology, is scheduled. Until that assessment is complete the rating shows Not yet rated. We have prioritised verifiable facts here, ownership, regulation, fees, speed and the deposit-only limitation, over marketing claims, in line with our view of the affiliate problem in casino reviews.
